Benson Porter has more than 30 years of experience within the financial services industry and became the president and chief executive officer (CEO) of BECU in 2012. He is responsible for all aspects of leading one of the country’s leading community financial cooperatives with more than 1.2 million members and over $24 billion in assets. His core areas of focus include strategy development, operational execution, and culture building to promote the financial well-being of BECU’s members and communities.
Benson’s tenure at BECU has been marked by ongoing innovation in how the credit union better serves its members and their communities. Since joining in 2012, he has spearheaded a variety of member services, including its Reprice program, Money Manager feature in the BECU mobile app and expansion of its digital offerings to deliver one of the highest rated mobile apps in the financial services industry. He also helped launch BECU’s People Helping People Awards program, where members can nominate their favorite nonprofits for BECU grants, and introduced its Annual Day of Service event, a one-day event where more than 2,200 employees host financial reality fairs for high schoolers across Washington State.
Prior to BECU, Benson spent five years as CEO of First Tech Federal Credit Union, where he oversaw the merger of Addison Avenue and First Tech Federal credit unions, the largest merger of its kind within the credit union industry. Before that, he spent more than a decade at Washington Mutual (WaMu), first as division executive for WaMu’s Community and External Affairs group, then as executive vice president and chief administrative officer, where he led the bank operations nationwide.
Beyond the office, Benson is equally dedicated to giving back to his community. From 2013 to 2020, Benson served as chair of the Board of Directors for Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines/Seattle following the first merger of two FHLBanks, where he helped oversee the integration of the two organizations. He is also currently on the boards of CU Direct and serves as vice-chairman of the CO-OP Financial Services Board.
In 2019, Benson was awarded Leader of the Year by 425 Business on behalf of his leadership and BECU’s commitment to serving its Eastside members and communities. He was also included in Puget Sound Business Journal’s inaugural Power 100 list in 2019 and 2020 due to his influence in the financial services industry.
