Executive Team



Melba Bartels is the executive vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) of BECU. In this capacity she oversees all aspects of BECU’s financial strategy, management and performance. Additionally, she is responsible for BECU’s Enterprise Strategic Services function focused on organization-wide execution of strategic initiatives. Since joining BECU in 2017, Melba has brought new sophistication and capabilities to its financial management, while at the same time improving the integration of strategy and operations with financial performance, all to the benefit of the credit union’s nearly 1.4 million members.

Melba has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, and in that time has held strategic, operational and financial leadership positions. Prior to joining BECU, Melba served as senior executive vice president and CFO at HomeStreet Bank, a $6 billion commercial bank headquartered in Seattle. She also held numerous strategic, operational and financial leadership positions at JPMorgan Chase where she was the senior vice president and CFO of a $60 billion asset business line in the Consumer division and at Washington Mutual Bank, including eight years focused on Corporate Treasury and Capital Markets activities. Melba also served as a sell side equity analyst at Ragen Mackenzie, a Seattle-based brokerage firm.

Beyond the office, Melba is equally dedicated to serving her local communities. In 2018, she joined the Seattle Central Foundation Board, which has now been integrated into the Seattle Colleges Foundation. The Foundation serves all Seattle District Colleges and focuses on providing quality education opportunities to all. Melba is currently the board’s finance committee chair.

In 2019, Melba was recognized as an honoree for the Puget Sound Business Journal’s CFO of the Year and, in 2020, was an honoree of Seattle Business Magazine’s Executive Excellence awards.

A Washington native, Melba attended South Seattle College before graduating from the University of Washington with a BA in Finance and an MBA.
